Coloma Event: Lichen Walk Along the American River

Saturday, March 24th 10am-12pm

As early as the mid 1800's, botanists became aware that lichens were becoming uncommon in areas within and surrounding large towns and cities. They began to recognize that air pollution emitted from these urban areas was affecting the colonization and growth of these organisms. Come meet some of the lichens, nature’s own “air pollution monitors.”  Cheryl Beyer, a botanist retired from the Forest Service, will lead this walk looking at some of the lichens in the Sierra foothills. Children 12+ w/adult supervision welcome. Rain or shine. Contact ARC to sign up and for meeting location (Coloma area). Suggested donation: $5 members /$10 non-members. julie@ARConservancy.org or 530-621-1224.
