  • “The Kailua Pulled Pork at Kona Coffee Café isn’t their house specialty by accident. The slow-smoked meat is shredded and melt-in-your-mouth tender, while the red onions and Greek peppers add a nice tangy kick. Served on a fresh-baked French roll, it’s my favorite noontime nosh.” 916-773-9800
  • “I’m a huge fan of the Candied BLTA at The Boxing Donkey Irish Pub. It has chipotle bacon marmalade, which adds the perfect touch of heat, and a slightly sweet maple flavor that sets off the saltiness of the bacon. It’s incredible!”
  • “I love the Rueben Sandwich from Café Americano. It has the perfect amount of house-made corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing on grilled rye. Seriously, go get one for lunch. You—and the 10 extra pounds you just put on—are welcome.”
  • “The way Beach Hut Deli—which over-stuffs their subs the way my wife over-stuffs a suitcase—generously uses cream cheese as a condiment is brilliantly insane. My favorite is the Surfin’ Bird, which features turkey, avocado, bacon and cream cheese. Its relative simplicity makes it one of their only sandwiches I remotely have a chance to fit my mouth around.”
  • “My vote goes to the Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana Hero from Dominick’s Italian Market & Deli. The house-made bread is chewy and firm; the breaded chicken cutlet is tender, the marinara sauce is messy and it oozes cheese. You won’t find a messier, more satisfying, murmur-softly-to-yourself-while-you’re-eating sandwich.”
