Blue Line Arts Presents Two Elegant Shows This Holiday Season

11/06/2014 05:00PM ● Published by Brenna McGowan

Blue Line Arts is presenting two elegant shows this holiday season!

Saints & Heroes showcases prints by Charles Barth and constructions by David Gilhooly.

Charles lives and works in Oaxaca, Mexico. Charles creates symbolic figural studies of real and fictitious characters. On first glance the subjects may seem ominous, but upon closer inspection one can see the humor and reverence that the artist uses to portray his characters. His etchings involve images from Mexico and popular cultures such as Kitsch, current fads and fashions, pop stars, TV images, films, rock music and disco.

Using a three color etching process, Charles creates images that are colorful, full of pattern, and detail. The end result involves bright or garish colors, exotic images, and the feeling of light moving over the surfaces.

David was born in Auburn, and he graduated from the University of California, Davis with a BA in 1965 and an MA in 1967. Gilhooly, together with Robert Arneson, Peter Vandenberge, Chris Unterseher and Margaret Dodd, worked together in TB-9 (temporary building 9) what was later to be called, "The Funk Ceramic Movement" of the San Francisco Bay Area.

After a successful display in 2013, 30 x 30 returns for its second year to Blue Line Arts. For this exhibition, artists were given 30 days to create 30 miniature works of art. The artist’s discipline and dedication to their medium over the month-long period has made for astounding results. Over 600 pieces of work measuring in at 6x6” each, including oil, mosaic, fabric, ceramic, and mixed media, will comprise 30x 30.

Participating artists include: Laura Ahola-Young, Jasmine Alleger, Kate Anderson, Marbo Barnard, Jenny Brinitzer, C Budd, Carlo Fantin, Marco Ippaso, Linda Knoll, Todd Lambrix, Krisztina Lazar, Madisen Lewis, Heather Robinson, Nancy Salerno, Susan Savory, Ryan Scotten, Jennifer Slutsky, Franklin Wilson, Melanie Hart, Jeanine Robb.
