They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but it’s the way to my heart, too.

In fact, bringing me garlic twists was part of my now-husband’s game plan when we were in high school.

On a recent trip to Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Folsom, we couldn’t help but wax nostalgic over an order of the delectable famous knots, tossed in a buttery garlic glaze and dusted with Parmesan. But there’s oh so much more in store here.

Pete’s has an Americanized-Italian family feel to it; the comfortable booths, dark woods and rich orange walls only add to its warm vibe. Flat-screen TVs over the bar ensure sports enthusiasts can keep their eye on the ball, while the walls boast images from Firestone Walker Brewing Company—speaking of which, they have an ample beer selection as well (perfect alongside one of Pete’s signature pies). And, if the crushed red pepper and pizza stand on the table wasn’t hint enough, you’ll want to try one of their nine creations (or make your own).

The Pete’s Chicken Combo with bacon, red onions and artichoke hearts was ridiculously addicting, and the thick dough was just hearty enough to stand up to the pizza’s creamy garlic sauce. Adding a dash of crushed red pepper flakes didn’t hurt either.

Among the American options, the towering Pete’s deluxe 1/2-pound burger with bacon, beer-battered onion rings and Cheddar cheese is big and bold enough to make you question the need for French fries. Trust me, you’ll want them anyway to dip into the smoky-meets-tangy house-made barbecue sauce that drips from the burger.

If you happen to have room for dessert, don’t overlook Pete’s Monster cookie topped with ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce. It may sound simple, but there’s something to be said for the combination of crisp cookie edges, gooey molten center and cool vanilla ice cream that’s just perfect. Or, for fellow knot fiends, you can always order some for dessert too—just swap the garlic-Parmesan for cinnamon and sugar. As if we needed an excuse to order more!
