Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
My business is in medicine (the best kind): laughter. I have been responsible for it since I can speak. Next week, I’m going to the Medical Board of California where they’ll award comics with a PhD in inner well-being; this time next week I’ll be Dr. Rodriguez.
What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?
The first time I hit a stage was an open mic night at Old Ironsides in Sacramento. I was 16, and my continuation high school teacher snuck me in. I bombed so badly, but learned that people will laugh because you’re funny and people will laugh just to shut you up. You have to figure out which one you are getting.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
For me, my biggest accomplishments (since doing stand-up) are helping in areas I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. I have been asked to help with numerous benefits (cancer, memorial, awareness) and fundraisers. Recently I was asked to go to Japan and entertain the troops—now that’s cool.
Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?
Adam Sandler—he makes horrible movies that make a ton of money and is still regarded as funny.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
Thunder Valley Casino Resort’s buffet—what else goes better with shrimp than soft serve and macaroni and cheese?
Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?
The movies! I love the movies. The Tower Theater is my favorite—it turns every movie into a film, if you know what I mean.
