Then & Now

ALBUMS

THEN:

Pieces of the Sky Emmylou Harris

There are some voices in music history that seem to come from somewhere entirely otherworldly. Emmylou Harris has been a mainstay of country, folk and rock music for 40-plus years, but every time you hear her sing it’s like falling in love for the first time. Pieces of the Sky was Harris’ 1975 major label debut, and her gorgeous soprano voice has not aged a single day. Seek her out, and fall in love.

NOW:

Slipstream Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt’s Slipstream is the sound of an artist in love with her craft. It’s been seven years since her last album, time not without its share of heartache; yet the indefatigable Raitt embraces her troubles and loss, digging deeper than ever to give us music from the depths of her soul. Both Bonnie and Slipstream are gifts that keep on giving.

BOOKS

THEN:

The Teammates: A Portrait of a Friendship by David Halberstam

Far from being a story about baseball, David Halberstam’s The Teammates captures a wonderful moment in time between friends,  both baseball legends. Revolving around Boston Red Sox teammates Bobby Doerr, Dominic DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky and Ted Williams, and their 60-plus year friendship, this is a story of men, love, memories...and change.

NOW:

Atlantic Fever: Lindbergh, His Competitors,  and the Race To Cross The Atlantic by Joe Jackson

Stories from the “golden age of aviation” between WW1 and WWII are rarely dull, and Atlantic Fever is no exception. The story of Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 flight across the Atlantic is a fascinating tale of innovation, invention, courage and obsession, both in the story of the aviators themselves, and the nation that eagerly watched the competition unfold.

DVDs

THEN:

The Bridges at Toko-Ri

Not only an entirely memorable and timeless war movie on its own merits, 1954’s The Bridges at Toko-Ri – starring William Holden and Grace Kelly – is absolutely worth watching for the award-winning aerial sequences, which won the movie a Special Effects Oscar at the 28th Annual Academy Awards. It’s a gripping look into the emotional cost of war.

NOW:

Red Tails

George Lucas’ pet project for almost 23 years, Red Tails is a Lucasfilm labor of love. A cinematic homage to the Tuskegee Airmen, starring Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr., Red Tails is an action-packed and entertaining look at the first African-American airmen in the United States Armed Forces, and an absolutely ideal popcorn movie for Father’s Day.

Flicks with Style

Brave

The newest Pixar movie is the first non-sequel for the company since the brilliant Up. This flick follows a Scottish princess’s quest for freedom from her kingdom’s aged customs, which inadvertently unleashes a curse. In order to break it, she must demonstrate true bravery in the face of danger. In theaters June 22.
