Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I am a nutrition specialist and personal trainer, certified by the National Academy of Sports and Medicine. Well before I began my professional studies, I understood that diet and exercise are partners. So many people fail to meet their fitness goals because they try to tackle one or the other in isolation. But real and lasting fitness comes from managing the two together. You can’t develop muscles that you don’t feed; and you can’t feed muscles that don’t know they’re hungry. These broad ideas became very personal when I was struck with Crohn’s disease. My subsequent battle for wellness convinced me that anyone can significantly improve their life through diet and exercise. So while my business has long-standing roots, I see my passion for helping others as a gift I’ve been given.

How are you involved with both the community and your customers?

Many people assume that serving your community means serving some kind of big picture. I believe community is built through personal relationships. I want my clients to know that I am there for them. It’s my job to learn their stories, meet them where they are, and to challenge them to be better than they believed they could be. I work with folks whose hopes range from getting out of a chair unaided to becoming more competitive in a specific sport.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Like diabetes, Crohn’s disease isn’t something you conquer. It is something you can learn to control so that it doesn’t control you. Learning this is both my biggest victory and my reason I exist. I am wholly committed to helping my clients learn to take control of their health, whether that means supplying recipes or escorting them to the grocery store, demonstrating an exercise or doing the reps side-by-side.

What’s your biggest job perk?

I get to be with people I genuinely care about all day!
