Makayla Middleton may only be eight years old, but she is already making a big difference in her community.
Known as the “bunny whisperer” to her friends and family, Makayla volunteers at Roseville’s Leaps and Bounds Rabbit Rescue (leapsandboundsrabbitrescue.cfsites.org), where she helps take care of abandoned or neglected rabbits in need of good homes. Along with the support of her family, Makayla also fosters rabbits awaiting adoption, training them to use a litter box and even to walk on a leash. “You can train a rabbit to do anything,” Makayla insists, and her mom, Julie, is often amazed by Makayla’s gift for working with rabbits. “She has a way of taking any bunny and calming them down,” Julie explains, going on to note that she has tried to teach her children to give back to the community in any way they can. “It’s a really good thing to show you can help others...it has bonded Makayla and I together.”
In the future, Makayla has modest plans to become a veterinarian and a pop star, in addition to rabbit-owner extraordinaire: “I want to have 55 rabbits!” she exclaims. “I think I can.”
Just clear that one with Mom first Makalya!
