Where to Buy Locally?

05/30/2011 08:13AM, Published by Style, Categories: In Print

Support your community by buying locally grown, in-season stone fruits and connect with the folks who grow your food.  Many varieties come and go all season and some have only a two-week availability, so check in at the markets often!

Foothill Farmers’ Markets – Tuesdays (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) in the Whole Foods parking lot in Roseville; Saturdays (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the R.C. Willey parking lot in Rocklin. For an updated market schedule, visit foothillfarmersmarket.com.
Buy Direct from the Farm – Find out where your food comes from – search direct at placergrown.org and head out on the road to a farm near you!
Local Produce Markets – Find out why Placer County once was “The Nation’s Fruit Basket” and venture out to the historic fruit packing districts of Newcastle (Newcastle Produce) and Loomis (Blue Goose Produce) where you’ll find local fruit and produce galore still housed in historic fruit packing sheds, now converted into fantastic gourmet food markets.
Retail Grocery Stores – Some producers in Placer County supply fruit to local grocery chains like Whole Foods, Nugget Market and Raley’s during the spring and summer months. How will you know if it’s Placer County? Pay attention to the signage near the fruit. Start looking for the “source.” Many stores tout local produce, and if it doesn’t say, just ask.

RECIPES:

Zesty Peach Salsa

Submitted by Carol Arnold, market manager, Foothill Farmers’ Market Association

Plan to make this fruity salsa early in the day or the day before for best flavor. Serve this tasty peach salsa with grilled or pan-fried pork, fish, or chicken.

Ingredients:

  • 4 small peaches, peeled and diced
  • Juice of 2 limes, about 1/4 cup juice
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons diced red bell pepper
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced jalapeno pepper, or to taste
  • 1 heaping tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • 1 small clove garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion or sweet onion

Preparation:
Combine all ingredients and refrigerate until serving time. The flavors are best if the salsa is refrigerated for 4 hours or overnight. Serve with grilled or broiled fish, pork, or chicken.

Makes 1 1/2 to 2 cups.

Simple Peach Cobbler
5 cups sliced peaches sweetened with 2 tablespoons sugar

  • ¼ pound butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¾ cup flour
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking power
  • ¼ cup warm milk
  • Cinnamon, to taste

Put sweetened fruit in a 9 x 9 inch baking pan. Melt butter and combine with 1 cup sugar and ¾ cup flour. Remove one cup of mixture and set aside. To remainder, add the 3 tablespoons flour, ½ teaspoon baking powder, and warm milk to make a thick batter. Pour batter over fruit, crumble remaining flour mixture over top and sprinkle with cinnamon to taste. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.
