On an easygoing Sunday, we swung through Historic Downtown Placerville on our way to Apple Hill and discovered The Cozmic Café & Pub – a perfect place to “nourish the body and enlighten the mind.”
The motto of this natural foods café and coffeehouse says it all. Everything on the menu is fun and creative, yet uncomplicated, and all dishes boast organic ingredients. Since it was brunch time, we mixed it up with both breakfast and lunch choices.
The Cozmic Scramble was a heavenly combination of three scrambled eggs, tomatoes, red onions and cheese, all topped with a lively salsa, avocado and fresh cilantro, then laid on a bed of organic spinach and served with whole grain toast. It was excellent – quite possibly because the eggs came from “free-range happy chickens in Somerset.” Our other breakfast item was a seemingly bottomless bowl of their Organic Oatmeal, lightly sweetened by brown sugar, then splashed with milk and served with freshly scooped butter.
We also couldn’t resist ordering the soup of the day, which happened to be Homemade Minestrone. Our server made sure we knew there were no noodles in the soup, but we certainly didn’t miss them thanks to the comforting broth and generous amount of fresh vegetables. We also had to try the Jalapeño Tuna Melt, a mound of tuna salad topped with jalapeños, olives, red onions, tomatoes and melted cheese with guacamole, and served on toasted organic sprouted-grain bread. The flavors mingled deliciously with the chunky albacore, the kick of the jalapeños, the warm cheese and the cool, crisp veggies. Smoothies at Cozmic are also a specialty, and we hit fresh-fruit gold with the Mixed Berry selection – a blend of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, marionberries and bananas.
After a tour of the spacious upstairs wine bar, ballroom and stage, we vowed to return to the eatery soon for an evening of great live music and more fresh eats.
