Breakfast is the most important – and my favorite – meal of the day.
On a lazy Sunday morning the beau and I were hungry for more than the ordinary Monday through Friday bowl of cereal, so we decided on dining at a staple in the Rocklin community for the past 36 years: Venita Rhea’s.
As Olivia Newton John’s “Hopelessly Devoted To You” played and the staff sang a celebratory “Happy Birthday” to a young boy turning the big 1-0, we were warmly greeted and led to our table. The positive energy that filled the eatery – employees and diners alike – instantly lifted me from my sluggish mood. Character is definitely not lacking here, as every inch of the restaurant is filled with charm: three murals depicting a French countryside on one wall and entirely windows on another, with brickwork and cheerful colors throughout.
First things first, my morning cup of Joe. Being the weekend, I decided to splurge on a mocha. The robust espresso mixed with the sweet chocolaty richness and creamy whipped topping made for a drink that would rival Starbucks any day. With a caffeine buzz in full effect, it was time to think food.
The knowledgeable server gladly answered all my menu inquiries with honest and helpful suggestions. Struggling to decide between French toast, a breakfast quesadilla, or omelette – I elected the Egg White Frittata. The dish featured a colorful arrangement of ingredients including artichoke hearts, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, charbroiled chicken breast and smoked Gouda cheese; light, but satisfying. The side of fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, and pineapple was succulent. Our other dish, the Bobby Earl, consisted of poached eggs, Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce all atop a health nut English muffin and accompanied by home fries and freshly squeezed orange juice. Each element of the dish came together in perfect harmony, leaving my palate utterly pleased.
It’s no wonder Venita Rhea’s is a neighborhood favorite for breakfast and lunch: the food is fulfilling, service prompt and you can’t help but leave anticipating your next experience at this family-owned establishment. I’m hopelessly devoted indeed!
