Our area boasts a number of wonderful and authentic Mexican restaurants. A relatively new and welcome addition to the area, Tres Agaves at the Fountains, fits the bill with traditional Jaliscan menu items and glass cases full of tequila.
Tres Agaves is quickly becoming the go-to watering hole for delectable margaritas. On a recent visit, my husband and I sat at a comfy booth and enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere and delicious fare. A bowl of chips and two types of salsa – chipotle and tomatillo – arrived as soon as we got comfortable. We munched as we perused the menu for what piqued our culinary interest. We began with an appetizer – the Coctel de Camarones, Jaliscan-style shrimp cocktail. Served in a large goblet, the chilled prawns with avocado, cucumber and onions in a spicy tomato broth offered the right amount of peppery zest for a starter. For the main course, I chose the Chili Rellenos con Huitlacoche and my husband decided on the Carne Asada. My entrée arrived, two poblano peppers stuffed with cheese, corn, zucchini and mushrooms – excellent flavors enhanced by the spice of the chili and sweetness of cheese and corn. My husband’s skirt steak was tender and pink throughout – exactly how he likes it. Accompanying his steak was also beans, rice, and a cabbage and mango salad.
Our meals were thoroughly filling and we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of leftovers we would be having for lunch the next day. Never one to refuse dessert, especially chocolate, I ordered the Pastel Choco, a dense chocolate spicy cake topped with Mexican gelato. This tasty treat offered a festive alternative to traditional chocolate cake and ice cream.
