As a breast cancer survivor, Carol is well aware of the importance of individual awareness of the disease. She urges women not to rely on their health care providers to act in their best interest. According to the National Cancer Institute, women in their 40s and above should have a mammogram every one to two years, and all women should do regular breast self-exams. “When doctors say, ‘it’s okay, it’s normal, it’s fibrosis,’ don’t always listen,” Carol adds. “Manage your own health care.” For more information on breast cancer prevention, visit cancer.gov or breastcancer.org.
